They ask why my smiles hide in shadows.
Why do my lips never tremble into laughter?
Why is it my eyes never brighten when I look?

It is not that I am unhappy, no.
It is not that I do not wish for joy.

For I shall smile. One day, I shall laugh.
But first I must wait
for the day when the clouds split in distant skies and the stars dance before me.
A time when the shadows leave me for just a moment – as I turn to face the Earth...

And as Lunas stares, as light pierces, golden strokes on sparkling, faded skies,
when time has spun, when light falls on a night and overshadows the shadows cast by they,
when we sleep in the comforts of knowledge that all is well at last.

...and I shall smile.

The first stanza was good. But then the rest of it to me was discordant although the flowery language was good- brought images of the emmensity and glory of the universe but...discordant in the way that the narrative voice seems wrong.

Am i right in saying that "you" will only smile when you have the knowledge and secrets of life?

Time for Change
:iconthoran-storyteller:
The discordance will be a product of a change in the voice.
It starts of as the voice of the perceiver - first person, then switches into the voice of a perceiver of the perceiver - third person.
I agree that that can throw someone off, but the point of the piece is to look at things from a distance, and to try and see the beauty in things as a whole, for there will always be fractures of imperfection throughout any beautiful thing. To this extent I chose the moon - 'lunas' - as the perceiver or Earth, and how he/she looks on without a smile, but perhaps one day, when the disquiet of the world fades, and there is a moment of serenity, however secretly fractured, he/she can smile.
To expand on that image, I chose to include the perceiver in the picture, hence the third person shift, allowing the reader to perceive the entire tableau of the moon looking upon an Earth worth smiling at. The reaction to beauty is as much a part of its being as the beauty itself.

Or something like that. Maybe I'm making excuses, but there we go. Still, it's not bad for an oldy. :)

Why does it make you sad?

Because that's a lot to ask for: "when we sleep in the comforts of knowledge that all is well at last." ...meaning a smile isn't in the near future. Or something. That's how I interpreted it.

I see, yes. I guess that is what it is saying.
But I always feel that there is optimism in this one. It's about stepping back and taking a look at something as a whole, realising that through all the faults and failures of the world, there may still be something to smile at. Maybe not right now, but some day.

So it's a two-sided message.

Indeed, but the "we're doomed" kinda slaps you in the face way more than the "there's hope" message xD

Fair enough.
I should really try for something more peppy in the future. Balance things out a bit. I can't be doing with all doom and gloom!
